The wind bloweth where it listeth

7/2/2019

John 3:8 The wind bloweth where it listeth, and thou hearest the sound thereof, but canst not tell whence it cometh, and whither it goeth: so is every one that is born of the Spirit.

Luke 17:

js 35 Two shall be in the field; the one shall be taken, and the other left.

js 36 And they answered and said unto him, Where, Lord, shall they be taken.

js 37 And he said unto them, Wheresoever the body is gathered; or, in other words, whithersoever the saints are gathered; thither will the eagles be gathered together; or, thither will the remainder be gathered together.

js 38 This he spake, signifying the gathering of his saints; and of angels descending and gathering the remainder unto them; the one from the bed, the other from the grinding, and the other from the field, whithersoever he listeth.

It is the spirit that chooses - whitersoever it/he listeth. It falls on one or another as it sees fit, to give testimony or to gathers one to the saints.

As in the days of Noah (Luke 17:27) the angels will gather the righteous out of the nations. Moses 7:27 "And Enoch beheld angels descending out of heaven, bearing testimony of the Father and Son; and the Holy Ghost fell on many, and they were caught up by the powers of heaven into Zion." This was just before the floods came.

"from them shall be taken away even that which they have."

7/3/2019

The JST of verse 26 says, "26 For I say unto you, That unto every one who occupieth, shall be given; and from him who occupieth not, even that he hath received shall be taken away from him."

This is the same wording as in the D&C 60 verses 2 & 3:

"But with some I am not well pleased, for they will not open their mouths, but they hide the talent which I have given unto them, because of the fear of man. Wo unto such, for mine anger is kindled against them. And it shall come to pass, if they are not more faithful unto me, it shall be taken away, even that which they have."

Also in 2 Nephi 28:29-30 it reads:

"Wo be unto him that shall say: We have received the word of God, and we need no more of the word of God, for we have enough! For behold, thus saith the Lord God: I will give unto the children of men line upon line, precept upon precept, here a little and there a little; and blessed are those who hearken unto my precepts, and lend an ear unto my counsel, for they shall learn wisdom; for unto him that receiveth I will give more; and from them that shall say, We have enough, from them shall be taken away even that which they have."

"times of Gentiles fulfilled"

7/4/2019

Luke 21:24
24 And they shall fall by the edge of the sword, and shall be led away captive into all nations: and Jerusalem shall be trodden down of the Gentiles, until the times of the Gentiles be fulfilled.

Luke 21:(js 25) 25 ¶ And he answered them, and said, In the generation in which the times of the Gentiles shall be fullfilled, there shall be signs in the sun, and in the moon, and in the stars; and upon the earth distress of nations, with perplexity;, like the sea and the waves roaring. The earth also shall be troubled, and the waters of the great deep;

D&C 45:

24 And this I have told you concerning Jerusalem; and when that day shall come, shall a remnant be scattered among all nations;

25 But they shall be gathered again; but they shall remain until the times of the Gentiles be fulfilled.

26 And in that day shall be heard of wars and rumors of wars, and the whole earth shall be in commotion, and men’s hearts shall fail them, and they shall say that Christ delayeth his coming until the end of the earth.

27 And the love of men shall wax cold, and iniquity shall abound.

28 And when the times of the Gentiles is come in, a light shall break forth among them that sit in darkness, and it shall be the fulness of my gospel;

29 But they receive it not; for they perceive not the light, and they turn their hearts from me because of the precepts of men.

30 And in that generation shall the times of the Gentiles be fulfilled.

Luke 21: (js 32) 32 Verily I say unto you, This generation, the generation when the times of the Gentiles be fulfilled, shall not pass away, till all be fulfilled.

Why prophecy - To "prepare" us for what is to come.

7/6/2019

60 And now, behold, I say unto you, it shall not be given unto you to know any further concerning this chapter, until the New Testament be translated, and in it all these things shall be made known; [ This will be know as Joseph Smith Matthew. ]

61 Wherefore I give unto you that ye may now translate it, that ye may be prepared for the things to come./ [ So why was Joseph Smith Matthew given? So that our hearts would be ready for those things to come. ]

Speak of Daniel's revelation in chapter 7, Jamieson-Fausset-Brown Bible Commentary says - "None of the previous world rulers, Nebuchadnezzar (Da 4:31-34), Darius (Da 6:27, 28), Cyrus (Ezr 1:2-4), Artaxerxes Longimanus (Ezr 7:12), had systematically opposed the Jews' religious worship. Hence the need of prophecy to prepare them for Antiochus."

Will we be prepare, but just not be able to endure?

The apostles began to wonder "if this be the Messiah."

7/6/2019

The Jews thou that the Messiah would appear suddenly and lead them to victory over their enemies. Christ delivered a message of the gospel of love, forgiveness and meeknesses. Now at the last supper with the apostles, he speak of being delivered up and crucified even the apostle began to wonder if Jesus was the Messiah.

Joseph Smith tells us. "js 36 (32) And they came to a place which was named Gethsemane, which was a garden; and the disciples [...33] began to be sore amazed, and to be very heavy, and to complain in their hearts, wondering if this be the Messiah. js 37 And Jesus knowing their hearts, said to his disciples, Sit ye here, while I shall pray.

The 4 appearances of Christ second return

7/7/2019

We generaly speak of the second coming or return of Christ as three appearances:

1. The sudden return to his temple

2. Return in glory

3. Standing on Mount of Olives

I wondered if the scriptures spoke of his visit to Joseph Smith. Well, in Matthew 24 & D&C 45, it discusses three events related to the return of Christ.

Matthew 24:

Event 1 - light of gospel

27 For as the lightning cometh out of the east, and shineth even unto the west; so shall also the coming of the Son of man be.

(JS 27 For as the light of the morning cometh out of the east, and shineth even unto the west, and covereth the whole earth; so shall also the coming of the Son of man be.)

28 For wheresoever the carcase is, there will the eagles be gathered together.

Event 2 - in the clouds

29 ¶ Immediately after the tribulation of those days shall the sun be darkened, and the moon shall not give her light, and the stars shall fall from heaven, and the powers of the heavens shall be shaken:

30 And then shall appear the sign of the Son of man in heaven: and then shall all the tribes of the earth mourn, and they shall see the Son of man coming in the clouds of heaven with power and great glory.

DC 45:

Event 1 - light of gospel

24 And this I have told you concerning Jerusalem; and when that day shall come, shall a remnant be scattered among all nations;

28 And when the times of the Gentiles is come in, a light shall break forth among them that sit in darkness, and it shall be the fulness of my gospel;

Event 2 - in the clouds

44 And then they shall look for me, and, behold, I will come; and they shall see me in the clouds of heaven, clothed with power and great glory; with all the holy angels; and he that watches not for me shall be cut off.

45 But before the arm of the Lord shall fall, an angel shall sound his trump, and the saints that have slept shall come forth to meet me in the cloud.

Event 3 - mount Olives split

48 And then shall the Lord set his foot upon this mount, and it shall cleave in twain, and the earth shall tremble, and reel to and fro, and the heavens also shall shake. (Zechariah 14)

49 And the Lord shall utter his voice, and all the ends of the earth shall hear it; and the nations of the earth shall mourn, and they that have laughed shall see their folly.

50 And calamity shall cover the mocker, and the scorner shall be consumed; and they that have watched for iniquity shall be hewn down and cast into the fire.

51 And then shall the Jews look upon me and say: What are these wounds in thine hands and in thy feet?

52 Then shall they know that I am the Lord; for I will say unto them: These wounds are the wounds with which I was wounded in the house of my friends. I am he who was lifted up. I am Jesus that was crucified. I am the Son of God.

Event 4 - suddenly to temple

Malachi 3:1 Behold, I will send my messenger, and he shall prepare the way before me: and the Lord, whom ye seek, shall suddenly come to his temple, even the messenger of the covenant, whom ye delight in: behold, he shall come, saith the Lord of hosts.

"Figurative" Event 5 - mount Sion

Revelation 14:1 And I looked, and, lo, a Lamb stood on the mount Sion, and with him an hundred forty and four thousand, having his Father’s name written in their foreheads.

Event 1 is the restoration of the gospel, the gospel light. So Event 1 could/would be the visit of the Father and Son to Joseph Smith initiating the return of the kingdom of God.

Event 2 is the coming of Christ in his glory.

Event 3 is the coming of Christ to Israel.

Event 4 is the visit of Christ to the Kirkland temple.

Event 5 is the establishment of missionary work to go forth upon the earth.

Abraham in Damascus

7/29/2019

Damascus is mentioned in Genesis 14:15 as existing at the time of the War of the Kings. According to the 1st-century Jewish historian Flavius Josephus in his twenty-one volume Antiquities of the Jews, Damascus (along with Trachonitis), was founded by Uz, the son of Aram. In Antiquities i. 7, Josephus reports:

Nicolaus of Damascus, in the fourth book of his History, says thus: "Abraham reigned at Damascus, being a foreigner, who came with an army out of the land above Babylon, called the land of the Chaldeans: but, after a long time, he got him up, and removed from that country also, with his people, and went into the land then called the land of Canaan, but now the land of Judea, and this when his posterity were become a multitude; as to which posterity of his, we relate their history in another work. Now the name of Abraham is even still famous in the country of Damascus; and there is shown a village named from him, The Habitation of Abraham.

Before they were Christians they were the sect of the Nazarenes

7/29/2019

Acts 24:5 For we have found this man a pestilent fellow, and a mover of sedition among all the Jews throughout the world, and a ringleader of the sect of the Nazarenes.

Acts 11:26 And when he had found him, he brought him unto Antioch. And it came to pass, that a whole year they assembled themselves with the church, and taught much people. And the disciples were called Christians first in Antioch

Holy Kiss?

Romans 16:16 Salute one another with an (a [JST]) holy kiss. (salutation. [JST]) The churches of Christ salute you.

Romans 6:17 But God be thanked, that ye were (are not [JST]) the servants of sin, for ye have obeyed from the heart that form of doctrine which was delivered you.

Satan cast out of the 1st and 2nd estate

Pre-mortal life:

When the leaders were selected for this earth and the bounds of the spiritual children were selected, we were given an inheritance. May have been the spiritual earth. We were able at that time to live as a society under the pre-mortal earth life. A law establish for the first estate. It was at this time that Satan and Michael establish the order of this earth's pre-existence. Michael after the old law and Satan at a new law which people would be forced to abide by. As time passed and independence seemed more apparent the followers of Satan became more emboldened, until the day they total rebelled and were cast out. This is the same pattern as the second estate.

Second recovery

8/19/2019

The time has at last arrived when the God of Abraham, of Isaac, and of Jacob, has set His hand again the second time to recover the remnants of his people, which have been left from Assyria, and from Egypt, and from Pathros, and from Cush, and from Elam, and from Shinar, and from Hamath, and from the islands of the sea, and with them to bring in the fulness of the Gentiles, and establish that covenant with them, which was promised when their sins should be taken away. See Isaiah 11, Romans 11:25-27, and also Jeremiah 31:31-33. This covenant has never been established with the house of Israel, nor with the house of Judah, for it requires two parties to make a covenant, and those two parties must be agreed, or no covenant can be made. Thus after this chosen family had rejected Christ and His proposals, the heralds of salvation said to them, "Lo, we turn unto the Gentiles;" and the Gentiles received the covenant, and were grafted in from whence the chosen family were broken off:(Joseph Smith, DHC 1:313)

When God led the children of Israel out of Egypt he wanted to make them as the City of Enoch, but they would not.

Meals at church

8/23/2019

1 Corinthians 11:17-29 - Speaks about meals eaten at church for fellowship followed by the Sacrament. There was in the days of Paul conflicts as some did not get enough to eat as other may have taken to much or not brought anything. We have this problem today. It is for this reason that many have stopped the practice.

Why stop with Rome as a kingdom and not Britain or USA

9/2/2019

The kingdoms of the earth associated with the Jews are stated starting with Abraham and running to Christ on earth. Babylon, Persia, Greeks, and then Rome. The stone is cut starting with Christ and rolls on until the restoration leading to the Millennium.

Baal

Babylonia
According to Herodotus, the rites performed at these temples included sexual intercourse, or what scholars later called sacred sexual rites:

The foulest Babylonian custom is that which compels every woman of the land to sit in the temple of Aphrodite and have intercourse with some stranger at least once in her life. Many women who are rich and proud and disdain to mingle with the rest, drive to the temple in covered carriages drawn by teams, and stand there with a great retinue of attendants. But most sit down in the sacred plot of Aphrodite, with crowns of cord on their heads; there is a great multitude of women coming and going; passages marked by line run every way through the crowd, by which the men pass and make their choice. Once a woman has taken her place there, she does not go away to her home before some stranger has cast money into her lap, and had intercourse with her outside the temple; but while he casts the money, he must say, "I invite you in the name of Mylitta". It does not matter what sum the money is; the woman will never refuse, for that would be a sin, the money being by this act made sacred. So she follows the first man who casts it and rejects no one. After their intercourse, having discharged her sacred duty to the goddess, she goes away to her home; and thereafter there is no bribe however great that will get her. So then the women that are fair and tall are soon free to depart, but the uncomely have long to wait because they cannot fulfil the law; for some of them remain for three years, or four. There is a custom like this in some parts of Cyprus.[19]

Solomon's tomb

Josephus Antiquities of the Jews — Book XVI
Containing the Interval of 12 Years.
From the finishing of the Temple by Herod, to the death of Alexander and Aristobulus.

Chapter 7.

How upon Herod’s going down into David’s sepulchre, the sedition in his family greatly increased.

1. As for Herod, he had spent vast sums about the cities, both without and within his own Kingdom. And as he had before heard that Hyrcanus, who had been King before him, had opened David’s sepulchre, and taken out of it three thousand talents of silver; and that there was a much greater number left behind; and indeed enow to suffice all his wants; he had a great while an intention to make the attempt. And at this time he opened that sepulchre by night, and went into it; and endeavoured that it should not be at all known in the city; but took only his most faithful friends with him. As for any money, he found none, as Hyrcanus had done: but that furniture of gold, and those precious goods that were laid up there. All which he took away. However, he had a great desire to make a more diligent search, and to go farther in, even as far as the very bodies of David and Solomon. Where two of his guards were slain, by a flame that burst out upon those that went in; as the report was. So he was terribly affrighted, and went out; and built a propitiatory monument of that fright he had been in; and this of white stone; at the mouth of the sepulchre: and that at great expence also. And even Nicolaus his historiographer makes mention of this monument built by Herod: though he does not mention his going down into the sepulchre: as knowing that action to be of ill repute.

When ye shall see Jerusalem compassed with armies

Luke 21:20 And when ye shall see Jerusalem compassed with armies, then know that the desolation thereof is nigh.

Benson Commentary

Luke 21:20-21. And when ye shall see Jerusalem encompassed with armies, &c. — The admonition here given to them who were in the midst of Jerusalem to depart out of it, and to them who were in the countries not to enter thereinto, shows that the encompassing of Jerusalem with armies, spoken of in the prophecy, was such as would permit the inhabitants to flee out of it, and those who were in the countries to enter into it. Behold here the wonderful prescience of Jesus! Cestius Gallus, in the beginning of the war [66AD], invested Jerusalem, and took Betheza, or the lower town. Josephus, (Bell., Luke 2:24,) says, “If he had continued the siege but a little longer, he would have taken the city. But, I think, God being angry with the wicked, would not suffer the war to end at that time. For Cestius removed his army, and having received no loss, very unadvisedly departed from the city.” And, chap. 25. of the same book, he further informs us, that “immediately after Cestius’s departure, many of the principal Jews daily fled from the city as from a sinking ship.” Among these, we may believe there were numbers of the Christians, who, remembering their Master’s admonition, and foreseeing what was to happen, embraced the opportunity thus afforded them of fleeing out of Judea, and so escaped the general ruin, as their Master had promised them, Matthew 24:13; Luke 21:18. To this agrees what Eusebius tells us, (Hist., Luke 3:5,) “That the people of the church in Jerusalem, being ordered by an oracle, given to the faithful in that place, left the city before the war, and dwelt in a city of Perea, the name of which was Pella.” This oracle, of which he speaks, seems to have been our Lord’s prophecy and admonition, to which every circumstance of the history perfectly agrees.
