Matthew 24 Talk

Amos 3:7 “Surely the Lord God will do nothing, but he revealeth his secret unto his servants the prophets.”

• What secret?

o The prophetic history of Israel from 830 BC (The time of Amos’ writings) to the millennium

o Warnings to Israel of pending destruction if they did not repent

As recorded in Luke 21, during the final week of Christ earthly ministry, he and the apostles were walking on the temple grounds.

Luke 21:
5 The apostles spoke of temple and great stones used in its construction.
6 Jesus said the days will come, that there will not be one stone left upon another.

Mount of Olives

7 Master, when shall these things be? and what are the signs when it will happen?
Christ gave the signs:
8 for many shall come in my name, saying, I am Christ; go not out to them.
9 You will hear of wars and commotions, ….
10 Nation shall rise against nation, and kingdom against kingdom:
11 And great earthquakes, and famines, and pestilences; and fearful sights and great signs shall there be from heaven.
12 and some you they will put to death.

Now the when:

Matthew 24:15 When ye therefore shall see the abomination of desolation, spoken of by Daniel the prophet, stand in the holy place, (whoso readeth, let him understand:)

But in Luke 20 And when ye shall see Jerusalem compassed with armies, then know that the desolation thereof is nigh.

21 Then let them which are in Judæa flee to the mountains; and let them which are in the midst of it depart out; and let not them that are in the countries enter thereinto.

Now the why:

22 For these be the days of vengeance, that all things which are written may be fulfilled.
27 And then shall they see the Son of man coming in a cloud with power and great glory.

Daniel 7:13 – Son of man

“I saw in the night visions, and, behold, one like the Son of man came with the clouds of heaven, and came to the Ancient of days,”

Matthew 26: (Caiaphas – high priest)

63 But Jesus held his peace. And the high priest answered and said unto him, I adjure thee by the living God, that thou tell us whether thou be the Christ, the Son of God.
64 Jesus saith unto him, Thou hast said: nevertheless I say unto you, Hereafter shall ye see the Son of man sitting on the right hand of power, and coming in the clouds of heaven.
65 Then the high priest rent his clothes, saying, He hath spoken blasphemy; what further need have we of witnesses? behold, now ye have heard his blasphemy.

2 Nephi 6:14-15 And behold, according to the words of the prophet, the Messiah will set himself again the second time to recover them; [the Jews] wherefore, he will manifest himself unto them in power and great glory, unto the destruction of their enemies, when that day cometh when they shall believe in him; and none will he destroy that believe in him... And they shall know that the Lord is God, the Holy One of Israel.

This Generation

32 Verily I say unto you, This generation shall not pass away, till all be fulfilled.

Okay let’s unpack all this.

False Christ:

Acts 5:
• Theudas, (thee- oo-dus) 44 AD - part the Jordan
• Judas of Galilee
• James and Simon, 46 AD, sons of Judas the Galilean,
• Menachem,(men-a-him) son of Judas the Galilean, 66 AD (Jewish War 2:433-448)

Signs from heaven:

“fearful sights and great signs shall there be from heaven.”

1. Meteor - A meteor resembling a sword hung over Jerusalem for one years.
We have Halley’s comet – 1986 / 2061 – every 75 to 76 year it appears.
rollback the dates 75 years year over year and it put Halley’s comet over Jerusalem at 66 AD.
Gen 1:14 – Lights in sky “for signs and for seasons”

2. Light – 9th hour of night … about the altar and the circumjacent buildings of the temple, a light equal to the brightness of the day, which continued for the space of half an hour.

3. Heifer - to the altar to be sacrificed,

4. Temple Gate - About the sixth hour of the night, the eastern gate of the temple

5. Army in Sky - Passover… chariots and armed men were seen in the air, passing round about Jerusalem.

6. “Let us remove hence.” - on the day of Pentecost, the priests were going by night into the inner [court of the] temple, they felt a quaking, and heard a great noise, and after that they heard a sound as of a great multitude, saying, “Let us remove hence.”
[ Ezekiel 10 - the war thrown. ]

Jerusalem compassed with armies

20. And when ye shall see Jerusalem compassed with armies, then know that the desolation thereof is nigh.

[Matthew 24:15 When ye therefore shall see the abomination of desolation, spoken of by Daniel the prophet, stand in the holy place, (whoso readeth, let him understand:) ]

21 Then let them which are in Judæa flee to the mountains; and let them which are in the midst of it depart out; and let not them that are in the countries enter thereinto.

• Menachem,(men-a-him) son of Judas the Galilean, the zealots (those seeking freedom from Rome) began to rebel against Rome as did other nations held by Rome.

66 AD

Menachem catches the eyes of Nero and Cestius Gallus – General of the 12 Roman Legend stationed in Syria.

The citizens wanted to open the gates to Cestius, but for not reason he leaves.
Cestius is attacked by the zealots

This is the when the Christians all flee to the south into the wilderness areas and set up shop.

days of vengeance

22. For these be the days of vengeance, that all things which are written may be fulfilled.

Luke 4: (Isaiah 61:1-2)

18 The Spirit of the Lord is upon me, because he hath anointed me to preach the gospel to the poor; he hath sent me to heal the brokenhearted, to preach deliverance to the captives, and recovering of sight to the blind, to set at liberty them that are bruised,

19 To preach the acceptable year of the Lord.

20 And he closed the book…

Stopped in middle of verse.

21 And he began to say unto them, This day is this scripture fulfilled in your ears.

Isaiah 61:

2 To proclaim the acceptable year of the Lord, and the day of vengeance of our God; to comfort all that mourn;

The vengeance was on the Jews, not Rome.

Revelation: 8-11

6 And the seven angels which had the seven trumpets prepared themselves to sound.

The trumpets represent the judgments to come on Israel.

Rev 8 thru 11 is a vision of these judgments:

1. Destruction of the land

2. Destruction of mount Moriah (collapse of religious worship)

3. Captivity under Rome

4. Collapse of the Jewish government

5. Death by famine

6. Death by the hand of Romans

7. Judgment and reward of the saints

67 AD Vespasian and Titus march on Galilee.

Rev. 8:

7 The first angel sounded, and there followed hail and fire mingled with blood, and they were cast upon the earth: and the third part of trees was burnt up, and all green grass was burnt up.

Scorched earth starting in Galilee – everyone fleeing to Jerusalem

8 And the second angel sounded, and as it were a great mountain burning with fire was cast into the sea: and the third part of the sea became blood;

Jerimiah and Babylon [Jer. 51]

Jeremiah 51: 25 Behold, I am against thee, O destroying mountain, saith the Lord, which destroyest all the earth: and I will stretch out mine hand upon thee, and roll thee down from the rocks, and will make thee a burnt mountain. 42 The sea is come up upon Babylon: she is covered with the multitude of the waves thereof.

61 And Jeremiah said to Seraiah, When thou comest to Babylon, and shalt see, and shalt read all these words; 63 And … when thou hast made an end of reading this book, that thou shalt bind a stone to it, and cast it into the midst of Euphrates: 64 And thou shalt say, Thus shall Babylon sink, and shall not …

Again – “And the second angel sounded, and as it were a great mountain burning with fire was cast into the sea:” Jerusalem is the mountain that is burning and cast into the sea (or the world of the Genetiles.)

10 And the third angel sounded, and there fell a great star from heaven, burning as it were a lamp, and it fell upon the third part of the rivers, and upon the fountains of waters;

11 And the name of the star is called Wormwood: and the third part of the waters became wormwood; and many men died of the waters, because they were made bitter.

The bitter waters are the Bitterness inflected by Rome

12 And the fourth angel sounded, and the third part of the sun was smitten, and the third part of the moon, and the third part of the stars; so as the third part of them was darkened, and the day shone not for a third part of it, and the night likewise.

Joseph’s dream – Sun, moon and stars

Collapse of government within Jerusalem (68 AD to 70 AD)

1st – took out royal lineage – Antipas and Sophas

2nd – appointed their own high priest

3rd – Murdered prominent citizens – Zacharias

13 And I beheld, and heard an angel flying through the midst of heaven, saying with a loud voice, Woe, woe, woe, to the inhabiters of the earth by reason of the other voices of the trumpet of the three angels, which are yet to sound!

5th Rev 9: (Jerusalem)

Now we turn to the end of Jerusalem.

1 And the fifth angel sounded, and I saw a star fall from heaven: and to him was given the key of the bottomless pit.

2 And he opened the bottomless pit; and there arose a smoke out of the pit, as the smoke of a great furnace; and the sun and the air were darkened by the smoke.

3 And there came out of the smoke locusts upon the earth.

5 And to them it was not given to kill men, but they should torment them for five months: and their torment was as the torment of a scorpion, when he striketh a man.

6 And in those days shall men seek death, and shall not find it; and shall desire to die, and death shall flee from them.

These locust had crown/face/hair/teeth/breastplate/scorpion tail.

Picture Galilee burning and out of the smoke come 60,000 Roman soldiers like locust heading for Jerusalem dressed in their armor.

These locust were not to kill the Jews but to torment them for 5 months. Vespasian did not fight the Jews, but laid siege for 5 months about the city.

Why did they wish to die?

13 And the sixth angel sounded:

15 And the four angels were loosed, which were prepared to slay the third part of men.

17 And I saw the horses in the vision, and the heads of the horses were as the heads of lions; and out of their mouths issued fire and smoke and brimstone.

18 By these three was the third part of men killed, by the fire, and by the smoke, and by the brimstone, which issued out of their mouths.

Now we come full circle. Amos 3:7

Rev 10:7 But in the days of the voice of the seventh angel, when he shall begin to sound, the mystery of God should be finished, as he hath declared to his servants the prophets.

15 And the seventh angel sounded; and there were great voices in heaven, saying, The kingdoms of this world are become the kingdoms of our Lord, and of his Christ; and he shall reign for ever and ever.

18 and the time of the dead is come, that they should be judged, and that thou shouldest give reward unto thy servants the prophets, and to the saints.

This is the time of the 1st judgment.

This is the time of the 1st resurrection.

The graves were open and many of the saints came forth out of their graves and appeared until too many.

Now all this is a type of things to come leading to the coming of Christ the judgment and the resurrection.

Christ taught in the parable of Lazarus and the rich man, “And he said unto him, If they hear not Moses and the prophets, neither will they be persuaded, though one rose from the dead.” (Luke 16:31).

When Cain killed Abel, he said he was free. Free from what? Free from the law. Free to take and do whatever he wanted.

Rev 11: 3-14 – The two witnesses

So what can we learn?

• Those that listen to the prophets lived and avoided suffering.

• Repent.

Appendix A

Heber K Kimball - Battle in the Sky

Late one fall evening after Heber and Vilate Kimball had retired to their bed, they were awakened suddenly by a urgent knocking at their door. A neighbor, John Greene, who lived just 100 steps away, stood at the door and bade them come out and behold the scenery in the heavens.”

They did so, and it was a beautiful starlit night, so exceptionally clear and brilliant that Heber said he could “see to pick up a pin.”

As the little group watched, a white smoke formed on the eastern horizon, and slowly began to rise upward. As it did so, it formed itself into a belt spreading across the sky toward the southwest, and it was accompanied by the sound of a rushing mighty wind.

Gradually, that belt flattened out and broadened across into a bow—like a rainbow, becoming transparent with a bluish cast, and stretching from horizon to horizon.

“In this bow an army moved, commencing in the east and marching to the west. They continued marching until they reached the western horizon. They moved in platoons, and walked so close that the rear ranks trod in the steps of their file leaders until the whole bow was literally crowded with soldiers.”

They were dressed in the full battle gear of 19th century soldiers—muskets; bayonets, and were so clear and distinct that Heber and the small group of neighbors could distinguish the features of their faces, and hear the jingle of their equipage as they moved.

Shortly, the entire bow from horizon to horizon was crowded and filled with marching men, the sound of that marching reaching clearly to the ears of the astonished onlookers.

Heber later described the event this way:

“No man could judge of my feelings when I beheld that army of men, as plainly as ever I saw armies of men in the flesh; it seemed as though every [the very] hair of my head was alive.”

“When the front rank of soldiers reached the western horizon a battle ensued.” The noise of the rush of men, and the clash of the arms was distinct and unmistakable. Heber and his friends looked upon this scene for hours, until it gradually disappeared.

Heber’s wife, somewhat afraid, turned to one of the older men in the group and asked, “Father Young, what does all this mean?”

And indeed it was. The night that Heber and his friends in Mendon, New York saw the vision and Brigham Young and friends saw it in Port Byron, New York was September 22, 1827—the same night that the angel Moroni delivered the plates of the Book of Mormon into the hands of the prophet Joseph Smith. The Book of Mormon is truly the Marvelous Work and a Wonder.

False Christ: (Notes)

• Theudas, (thee- oo-dus) c. 44 CE (Jewish Antiquities 20.97; Acts 5:36?)

Act 5: - Peter and John preaching at temple / put in prison / released by angel /

Sadducees council to kill them / Gamaliel said:

35 And said unto them, Ye men of Israel, take heed to yourselves what ye intend to do as touching these men.

36 For before these days rose up Theudas, (thee- oo-dus) boasting himself to be somebody; to whom a number of men, about four hundred, joined themselves: who was slain; and all, as many as obeyed him, were scattered, and brought to nought.

37 After this man rose up Judas of Galilee in the days of the taxing, and drew away much people after him: he also perished; and all, even as many as obeyed him, were dispersed.

38 And now I say unto you, Refrain from these men, and let them alone: for if this counsel or this work be of men, it will come to nought:

39 But if it be of God, ye cannot overthrow it; lest haply ye be found even to fight against God.

• James and Simon, c. 46 CE, sons of Judas the Galilean, crucified by Tiberius Alexander, nephew of Philo, who was Procurator 46-48 CE (Jewish Antiquities 20.102)

• Eleazar son of Dineus (Din-e-us), c. 52 CE under Felix (Jewish War 2.253; Jewish Antiquities 20:161)

• Menachem,(men-a-him) son of Judas the Galilean, 66 CE (Jewish War 2:433-448)

“Why, it’s one of the signs of the coming of the Son of Man,” he replied in a lively and pleased manner.
